Statement on the passing of Richard Knight Jr.

DALLAS — We share with the family, the City of Dallas and all who mourn the passing of my friend and confidant, former Dallas City Manager Richard Knight Jr. To those who have only heard of him, he was certainly much more, as we who knew him well will attest.

Richard came to Dallas as a proven commodity, first serving as Assistant City Manager before becoming Dallas' first-ever African American City Manager. He was a pioneer. Before there was a John Ware and now T.C. Broadnax, stood Richard Knight. His abilities, professionalism, competence and confidence opened the doors for other minorities interested in city governance to follow and succeed. Dallas trusted Richard Knight enough to make a Ron Kirk possible.

He served as a mentor for many and his contributions and civic engagement did not end when he left City Hall. He was Board Chairman of the State Fair of Texas and a former regent of the University of North Texas and provided leadership to Goodwill Industries. He was my appointment to Texas Southern University's Board of Regents. As a past chairman, Richard was instrumental in the development of the Black Contractors Association and worked extensively with the Dallas Black Chamber.

His example helped lead his son Marcus to also become involved in government. And let's not forget that Richard was a highly successful businessmen and entrepreneur whose loss will leave a void for those who loved and knew him best. Richard met the challenge for those for whom much was given.

My wife Carol joins me in offering prayers and condolences to Mavis and the family of Richard Knight Jr.
