Texas Transportation Commission Awards Orange Grove $1.7 Million Grant for “Grove Sidewalk & Crosswalks” Project

Austin, TX – Today, the Texas Transportation Commission approved a $1,678,000 federal Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TA) award to the City of Orange Grove for the Grove Sidewalk and Crosswalks project. The Commission’s action is part of $284.8 million across 73 projects statewide for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and planning—including sidewalks, shared-use paths, bikeways, high-visibility crosswalks, lighting and signage safety upgrades, and planning studies.

Orange Grove’s project is categorized as community-based (non-urban) and was approved for Transportation Development Credits (TDCs)—meaning the TA award represents 100% federal funds with no local match required. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will work with Orange Grove to execute a local agreement and advance project development consistent with program rules.

The TA Program is authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which was signed into law in 2021 under President Joe Biden to provide over $1.2 trillion for public works and infrastructure across the United States. Demand for TA funding was high in 2025 with 226 detailed applications submitted by 190 local entities, requesting about $988 million in federal funds. TxDOT prioritized project readiness, safety, connectivity and accessibility, community support and planning, and geographic balance.

State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa expressed his support for this funding, stating, “I appreciate the Texas Transportation Commission for selecting the City of Orange Grove as one of the recipients of TxDOT’s 2025 Transportation Alternatives grant. With this funding, we are investing in sidewalks and crosswalks, which are important for safety, accessibility, and quality of life. I commend the Mayor of Orange Grove, Carl D. Srp, the members of the council, and the city staff for their work and effort in securing this grant.”
