Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa Announces $500,000 Grant from TWDB for Raymondville Drain Project

AUSTIN, TX — Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa is pleased to announce that the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) voted today to award a $500,000 grant to Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 for the Raymondville Drain Project. This grant, made possible through a rider in the state budget, brings the total funding for the project from this rider to $13.1 million. Total state of Texas support for this project is now $20.1 million.

The Raymondville Drain Project, developed by Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Galveston District, aims to create a comprehensive drainage channel system spanning approximately 60 miles. By providing an alternate drainage conveyance for Hidalgo County and improving drainage conveyance for northern Willacy County during major storm events, this project will significantly enhance public safety and reduce property loss.

Senator Hinojosa recognizes the importance of investing in drainage infrastructure to mitigate future flooding. He states, “By investing in projects like the Raymondville Drain Project, we are taking proactive steps to protect our communities from the devastating effects of flooding. This grant will help ensure that our region is better equipped to handle major storm events, safeguarding the lives and property of our communities.”

Senator Hinojosa extends his gratitude to the Hidalgo County Commissioners for their unwavering commitment to this project and their tireless efforts in securing funding. He also thanks the TWDB board members for their unanimous vote and their staff for their support and assistance in making this grant possible.

With a total estimated construction cost of approximately $418 million, the Raymondville Drain Project will be developed in six major phases as funds become available. The project includes the construction of over 14 miles of new drainage channels, improvements to approximately 40 miles of existing channels, the creation of a major detention lake spanning approximately 250 acres south of Edinburg International Airport, and the construction of various flood control structures such as weirs and bridges.
