AUSTIN, TX – Last week, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced the suspension of the FIGG Bridge Group (FIGG) from the Harbor Bridge Project. The suspension allows TxDOT time to fully review the recent findings by the National Transportation Safety Board and their investigation of the 2018 Florida International University pedestrian bridge collapse that was designed by FIGG.
As your state elected officials, we have been communicating and working with TxDOT, the agency responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project, to ensure the agency is taking all precautions necessary to construct a safe bridge.
Public safety is our top priority, and we have received commitments from TxDOT that there are no safety concerns with any part of the project that has been completed to date. The suspension of FIGG is to ensure that a comprehensive review is being conducted of design plans for construction that has not yet been completed. The process established by TxDOT has multiple checks, including both internal and independent engineers with expertise in these types of projects.
While there will be delays for the completion of the project, there is no estimated completion date at this time. We support TxDOT's efforts to review all aspects of the project and their commitment to construct a safe bridge.
Over the next 30 days, TxDOT has agreed to brief our offices weekly on the status of the project. In about a month, TxDOT will provide an update to the residents of Nueces and San Patricio Counties of their review of the project. Any questions from the public or the media can be made to Rickey Dailey with the TxDOT Corpus Christi District Office at (361) 808-2544.
