Texas Water Development Board Sunset Bill Passes Government Organization Committee

(Austin, TX) — The Water Development Board functions essentially like a bank, or financing entity, using its bonding authority and outstanding credit rating to award grants and give access to state-subsidized loans to cities, counties and other political subdivisions to develop their water infrastructure. The projects range from wastewater treatment, municipal solid waste management, flood projects, conservation, agricultural water use, and groundwater district creation. The city of Alton, for example, will receive $9.6 million from the state to develop sewer services in areas that have never had it before - preventing the contraction of hepatitis and other diseases.

Previous Comments on the Texas Water Development Sunset Bill by Senator Hinojosa

  • "When communities can better plan their water resource management they can develop sustainable growth - leading to higher prosperity and stability in the future."
  • "The rapid growth taking place in South Texas and across the state coupled with droughts and natural disasters only highlight how important it is that TWDB is working efficiently for our constituents."
  • "It would be hard for communities, like many in South Texas, to develop their water infrastructure without this kind of financial assistance. The board's has flexible financing helps communities and entities of all sizes and types to develop their water and wastewater projects - our state's water infrastructure would be set back 20 years without the agency."
