(Austin, TX) - Yesterday, Del Mar College students came to the State Capitol to speak to the Corpus Christi Delegation about the proposed budget cuts to education. Senator Juan Hinojosa released the following statement.
"Education is the best equalizer in society; it opens doors and expands horizons. But today, our institutions of higher learning are in crisis. The proposed budget does not set aside the funding our schools need, and that threatens to damage not only our economic future, but the future of our youth.
"I was happy to know that the students from Del Mar College took time from their schedules to meet with the Corpus Christi Delegation. We heard their voice loud and clear yesterday, and we will fight for their interests.
"I commend the Del Mar students for their participation in the political process and want them, and other students in Texas, to know that as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, I will work to find solutions to our current funding crisis that extend beyond cuts.
"We need to fund education adequately if Texas is to compete in a globalized economy. Otherwise, the important progress that has taken place, not only in the Coastal Bend but throughout the state, will dissolve. Education needs to be a priority."
