McAllen -- Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa is pleased to announce that the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice will hold a hearing at McAllen City Hall on Wednesday.
Senator Hinojosa said the committee will take public testimony on allegations of abuse and neglect within the Evins Regional Juvenile Center.
"We've been working with the Texas Youth Commission in attempts to improve conditions for both TYC inmates and staff. During this hearing, I'd like to investigate why lengths of incarceration are increasing and learn why there are so many injuries among guards and incarcerated youths. I also want us to discuss the Board of Director's level of oversight in the management of TYC facilities," said Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa.
The Committee will also take testimony on border violence in Hidalgo County and other border counties. Senator Hinojosa worked with Lt. Governor Dewhurst and Senator Whitmire, Chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, to bring the hearing to McAllen.
"Violence along the border is something we live with, read about and see on television here in the Valley." said Senator Hinojosa. "It is important for legislators to hear the concerns of those most affected by border violence so that they can take those concerns back to Austin during the next session."
