AUSTIN -- Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa is pleased to announce that the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee will hold a hearing in McAllen on Wednesday, August 30, to take public testimony both on allegations of abuse and neglect within the Evins Regional Juvenile Center as well as on drug-related criminal violence in Hidalgo County and other border counties.
Senator Hinojosa worked with Lt. Governor Dewhurst and Senator Whitmire, Chair of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, to bring the hearing to McAllen.
"Given the serious allegations against the Evins facility, I want the committee overseeing the Texas Youth Commission to hear testimony from parents and community leaders who are familiar with how the Evins facility is managed," said Senator Hinojosa. Senator Hinojosa is a member of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee.
"Unfortunately, violence along the border is something we live with, read about and see on television," said Senator Hinojosa. "My goal is for Committee members to hear firsthand the concerns of those most affected by border violence in an effort to develop policy that will protect our residents and business community."
The hearing will be held Wednesday, August 30, at 9:30 a.m. in the McAllen City Council Chambers located at 1300 Houston Street, McAllen, Texas 78501.
