Senator Hinojosa Honors Fallen South Texas Heroes in Texas Senate

AUSTIN -- Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa adjourned Thursday's Senate session in honor of two South Texas heroes who lost their lives in Iraq.

Dustin Sekula, 18, and Christopher Ramirez, 34, both of Edinburg, were remembered for their sacrifice and contribution to their country on the Senate Floor.

"As we enjoy freedom of speech and the liberty we have here, we need to be reminded that freedom is not free and that ultimately, sometimes we must pay for it with our lives," Sen. Juan Hinojosa said.

Dustin Sekula was the son of Dan and Lisa Sekula and a graduate of Edinburg North High School in 2003.

"Dustin was a true leader and a bright student. He was a cowboy who loved country music," Sen. Hinojosa said. "He was awarded an agriculture scholarship but chose to enlist and fight for his country in Iraq. Today we remember him for his ultimate sacrifice for our country."

Christopher Ramirez, 34, was a United States Army Sergeant, who was killed on his third tour of duty in Iraq. A 14-year army veteran, Sergeant Ramirez was remembered for his zest for life and contributions to his country.

"Sergeant Ramirez went above and beyond the call of duty to serve his country," Sen. Hinojosa said. "He was a brave soldier and the people of South Texas will miss him."

Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. also joined the Senator in remembering the two soldiers on the senate floor. "Each of these lives are a testament to the strength of will, and dedication of heart, and the embodiment of the American Spirit - a Spirit that hates injustice, is intolerant of tyranny, believes in equality for men and women," said Sen. Lucio.
