SENATOR NELSON AWARDED TEXAS PTA CHAMPION FOR CHILDREN

AUSTIN – The Texas Parent Teacher Association has selected State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, as a Texas PTA Champion for Children for her leadership during the 86th Legislative Session.

"Senator Nelson has been a steadfast advocate for Texas’ youth for many years, as a teacher, a member of the State Board of Education, and a leader in the Texas Senate," said Suzi Kennon, President-Elect of Texas PTA. "We appreciate her leadership in carrying legislation to create the Mental Health Care Consortium. We’re confident that her work will positively impact students, particularly our state’s most vulnerable students, for decades to come."

Before joining the Senate, Senator Nelson was a public school teacher who served two years on the State Board of Education. She is also a lifetime member of the PA.

"As a former PTA mom, this award is particular meaningful to me. I am so grateful to this organization and all the parents who are involved in their child’s education. Having that support makes a tremendous difference in student success,” Senator Nelson said.

In presenting the award, Texas PTA made note of Senator Nelson’s work to promote early intervention for students at risk of suicide, substance abuse or becoming a danger to themselves or others. As chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Nelson sponsored the FY 20-21 budget, which includes $100 million for the Texas Child Mental Health Consortium – a collaboration of Texas medical schools to provide mental health services for young at-risk Texans.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
