SENATOR JANE NELSON RECEIVES AWARD FROM AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has received the Advocacy in Action Award from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

“Sen. Nelson is a longtime supporter of cancer research, helping to establish CPRIT and its lifesaving programs,” said ACS CAN Texas Government Relations Director Marina Hench. “On behalf of ACS CAN Texas’ volunteers and the millions of Texans served by CPRIT-funded services, I thank her for continuing to champion the importance of cancer research.”

The award was presented to Senator Nelson in recognition of her tireless dedication to cancer prevention, treatment, and cures – including her sponsorship of Proposition 6, which – if approved by voters in November -- re-authorizes the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

"Since we established CPRIT in 2007, Texas has more than tripled our investment in prevention and has made more than five million cancer prevention services available to Texans," said Senator Nelson. "We have also made several breakthroughs and solidified Texas as a major cancer research center and attracted a Nobel laureate and other distinguished scientists to our state."

American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network focuses on cancer prevention, seeking new treatments and ensuring all Americans have access to quality medical care. They also work to improve the quality of life of those who have been affected by cancer, both during and after treatment.

Senator Nelson authored the original legislation that created the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas in 2007. This is the sixth time she has received the Advocacy in Action Award from the American Cancer Society.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
