AUSTIN – Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, was named Women's Health Champion by the Texas Women's Healthcare Coalition for her continued leadership on preventive health services for women. This is the third session in a row Senator Nelson has received this recognition.

“This award is special because we have worked hard to address some very serious challenges for women’s health. Over three straight sessions we have made significant investments and adopted policies to ensure that women in every corner of our state can receive preventive health services,” Senator Nelson said. “I am proud of our advancements and stand ready to continue making progress on women’s health.”

Under Senate Bill 1, the appropriations bill authored by Senator Nelson, women’s health receives $284.6 million -- a record high level of funding. SB 1, Article II, Rider 164, directs the Health and Human Services Commission to develop strategies to confront the top causes of pregnancy-related deaths in Texas. Other budget riders direct the Health and Human Services Commission to re-apply for federal funding for the Healthy Texas Women program and to improve reporting on screenings for and treatment of postpartum depression. Since 2011, Texas has more than tripled the number of providers participating in Texas' women's health programs with over 5,300 across the state.

"The Texas Women's Healthcare Coalition appreciates Senator Nelson's vocal support of contraception and other crucial women's preventive health services. Under her leadership of the Senate Finance Committee, Texas has maintained critical funding for our state's women's health programs," said Dr. Janet Realini, chairwoman of the coalition.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
