Live Caption Instructions

Hearing impaired individuals using desktop computers may make use of the live caption feature available in the Google Chrome browser.

To enable live captioning:

  1. Open Google Chrome. Click the Customize button (three dots ) to the right of the address bar.
  2. Towards the bottom of the Customize menu, select Settings.
  3. On the main Settings page, select Accessibility from the menu options on the left (towards the bottom).
  4. From the Accessibility page, turn on the Live Caption option. You may customize the captions from this page as well.

Once you launch a video, you can toggle captions on and off from the Media Controls Chrome Media Controls Icon menu, located to the right of the address bar when media is playing.

Alternatively, Windows 11 users (version 22H2 or later) may instead utilize Windows live captions. Instructions and support information may be found on this Microsoft Support webpage.

Mac users (MacOS version 13 or later on Apple Silicon devices) may instead utilize Live Captions (Beta). Instructions and support information may be found on this Apple Support webpage.


Hearing impaired individuals using an Apple iOS mobile device (iOS version 16 or later) may make use of Apple's Live Captions (beta).

To enable live captioning:

  1. Go to your iPhone/iPad Settings. Select Accessibility, then Live Captions (under the Hearing heading).
  2. Turn on Live Captions (Beta).
  3. By default, Live Captions are shown across all apps. To get live captions only for certain apps such as FaceTime or RTT, turn them on below In-App Live Captions.

Hearing impaired individuals using a Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, or other select Android device, may make use of Google's Live Caption service.

To enable live captioning:

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Tap Sound, then Live Caption.
  3. Once enabled, you can turn captions on and off by pressing the volume button, then tap Live Caption under volume controls.

Hearing impaired individuals using a Samsung mobile device may make use of Samsung's Live Caption feature.

To enable live captioning:

  1. Open Device Settings.
  2. Tap on Accessibility.
  3. Tap on Hearing enhancements.
  4. Turn on live caption.
