Senator Creighton Applauds Passage of Historic Property Tax Reform

AUSTIN, TX – Today, the Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 2, delivering meaningful reform to taxpayers. As a Member of the Senate Committee on Property Taxes, Senator Creighton heard hours of testimony from local elected officials, tax experts, economists and Texas businesses and homeowners regarding this bill.

“Texas property taxes are out of control, and homeowners deserve meaningful relief, so today I was proud to support Senate Bill 2, the most significant reform of the system in a generation”, said Senator Creighton. “Every community in Senate District 4, whether urban, suburban or rural will see rising rates reigned in, and will finally have more control in the process.”

Giving citizens a say in the process, Senate Bill 2 requires voter approval for any local tax increase over 3.5% for municipalities and 2.5% for school districts, and instructs local governments to hold elections in November to accommodate the most input possible. Overall, the bill includes added transparency and efficiency for taxpayers, and provides measurable relief for every Texas community.

The budget approved by the Senate last week included $2.7 billion to reduce property taxes.

“Texas families are being taxed out of their homes, and after decades of rhetoric surrounding the subject, the Senate today delivered meaningful property tax reform for all Texans,” said Senator Creighton. “There is still a great deal of work to do this session to improve the property tax and school finance systems, but I am proud of our actions, and will continue to fight for Texas taxpayers.”
