AUSTIN — Today, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) releases the following statement on the occasion of House Passage of Senate Bill 376. The bill would provide that all schools participating in the federal School Breakfast Program make available a free breakfast to each of their students, if 80 percent or more of those students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
"Passage of this bill will have an enormous impact on both the nutrition and academic performance of Texas public school students. Senate Bill 376 will ensure that many more Texas students receive a healthy breakfast. Few resources are as important as a nutritious breakfast. It has been shown that providing access to nutritious food increases students' concentration, and reduces students' absences and discipline problems. We have an obligation to ensure that every Texas child has the resources they need to reach their full potential. I feel so honored to have carried this bill on behalf of Texas' hungry children."
Senate Bill 376 passed the House Thursday. The bill previously passed out of the Senate Committee on Education and was passed by the full Senate in April. Now passed by both chambers, the bill moves to the Governor.
