FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 27, 2012
Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. will be hosting an Education Town Hall on Thursday May 3rd at the Regional Academic Health Science Center in Harlingen. The meeting will take place between 5pm to 8pm. All interested parties are most welcome to attend.
"Last session, those in Austin sold our school children short with a budget full of cuts," Senator Lucio said. "It is time to take action by discussing the changes and challenges to public education. Together we can find solutions that will ensure our children receive the schooling they are worthy of."
Issues being discussed will include Senate Bill 8 (teacher contract laws), class size limits, student assessment, teacher accountability and teacher training/preparation.
"As I have said before, I firmly believe that solutions to the challenges that our public schools are currently facing can be developed best by those who live and work every day at our schools," Senator Lucio said.
Organizations represented at the event include the Texas American Federation of Teachers, the Texas State Teachers Association, the Texas Classroom Teachers Association and the Association of Texas Professional Educators. Local teachers and school district staff will be in attendance as well.
The meeting is the second organized by Senator Lucio. The first took place on Wednesday, February 29th in Edinburg.
