The Texas Association of Counties (TAC) has named Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., a Friend of County Government for his work during the 82nd Legislative Session.
"I am honored to receive this award. Strong county governments are vital to democracy in Texas," Lucio said. "County governments are the closest form of government to the people and they will always have a friend in me."
The award will be presented during Cameron County Commissioners Court (Item 2B), which begins at 12.00 pm on Thursday October 27th, 2011.
The decision to honor Lucio was an easy one because of his leadership and consistent support of issues important to counties, including his efforts to maintain local control. TAC especially appreciates the senator's work on minimizing many of the proposed state budget cuts, including those relating to mental health services and the criminal justice system. Those cuts would have been detrimental to county governments and local taxpayers.
Lucio's unwavering efforts to limit substandard development are also recognized.
"TAC is grateful for Sen. Lucio's support of county government, including his efforts to preserve decision-making authority at the county level," said TAC Legislative Director Paul Sugg. "He has never forgotten his roots as a county commissioner and county treasurer, and we appreciate the insight this brings to his service as a state lawmaker."
