FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 21, 2006
Low-income subsidies are in place to help seniors pay for prescription-drug expenses not already covered by the Medicare drug benefit. There are roughly 9,200 residents of Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr and Willacy counties who possibly are eligible for the subsidy but have not yet applied for it, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The subsidy is worth an average of $3,700 a year for participants, according to the Medicare agency, and it pays for all or part of the monthly premiums and annual deductibles, fills in the coverage gap, and lowers the prescription co-payments.
Beneficiaries would benefit from finding out if they are, indeed, eligible. The low-income subsidy enrollment for 2006 coverage period runs through the end of this year. To find out if you qualify, please call 1-800-772-1213 or 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), or visit your local Social Security office (the Web site for the regional Social Security Administration in Dallas, http://www.socialsecurity.gov/dallas/index.htm, can help you find it).
