Senator Lucio Comments on the Passing of former U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Jr.

"Today, mankind suffered a huge loss with the death of one of the greatest leaders of our time, Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr. Lloyd Bentsen's achievements reverberated across the nation, but it was here in the Rio Grande Valley where he made his first public service contributions."

"Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr., is a native son of the Rio Grande Valley. He was born in Mission, Texas, on February 11, 1921. Mr. Bentsen is widely known and well-regarded for his four-term service in the U.S. Senate, his Vice Presidential bid in the 1988 presidential race, and for his post as U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Clinton. Yet, no matter how far and how high he rose in our nation's political ladder, Senator Bentsen never forgot his roots in the Valley. He is a true South Texas icon. We will truly miss him."

"During his tenure as Hidalgo County, Bentsen became the first Chair of the Rio Grande Partnership, which has continued to successfully develop and promote the business community in South Texas for the past sixty years. Bentsen earned an outstanding reputation as Hidalgo County Judge, which helped him win a bid for the U.S. House of Representatives at the young age of 27. As a U.S. Representative, Bentsen most notably opposed a bill to levy a poll tax intended to deter minorities from voting."
