FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 13, 2004
AUSTIN, TX--"Now that Governor Perry has called a Special Session on Public School Finance, I expect an open and honest dialogue. This is a time to set aside all partisan ideologies and consider what is most important--the education of all school children in Texas. I trust that my colleagues and I will come together in a nonpartisan manner to work on a school finance plan that is equitable for all of Texas.
I will stand firm to protect the interests of South Texas and especially our school children, who deserve the very best education Texas has to offer. I will not support a plan which cuts a single penny from South Texas schools and burdens my constituents with regressive taxes.
I have contacted Border Senators and asked them to join me in hosting a Border Education Summit. We intend to invite all superintendents, business leaders and interested citizens along the Border. Furthermore, I encourage my constituents to participate in the official public hearings in Austin to share their views."
