FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX - State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. filed legislation (Senate Bill 27) today requesting $19,161,612 in general revenue funding for the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) in South Texas for the next biennium beginning Sept.1, 2003.
With the $81 million in spending eliminated by Gov. Perry in his line-item vetoes, and another possible savings in revenues from this special session, there appears to be the necessary funding we are requesting for continuing the support and development of the RAHC, said Sen. Lucio.
I am coauthoring SB 27 to ensure that the Regional Academic Health Center receives the full funding it deserves, said State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa. "The RAHC is important not only to the Rio Grande Valley, but also to the rest of Texas because diseases like tuberculosis and diabetes don't stop at the Border. The RAHC deserves full funding and nothing less."
The RAHC, established in 1997 by Senate Bill 606 authored by Sen. Lucio, receives appropriations from the general revenue fund of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the agency that oversees the RAHC. The four components of the RAHC are in Harlingen, Edinburg, McAllen and Brownsville.
