"Honoring Coach Darrell K. Royal"

AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) today announced Texas Legend and former University of Texas Coach Darrell K. Royal will be the honored guest at his 15th Annual Texas Legends Golf Classic on Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Fort Brown Memorial Golf Club in Brownsville.

"I am extremely excited to have Coach Royal as the guest host this year," said Sen. Lucio. "No person has done more for the children of Texas in the last 30 years than Coach Royal. He was more than a football coach. He was a mentor, father figure and best friend to thousands of students both in athletics, as well as in other disciplines. I feel safe in saying that Coach Royal meaningfully touched their lives in one way or another."

Coach Royal is involved in many organizations that help the less fortunate all over the state. He hosts the Ben, Willie and Darrell Golf Classic annually at the Barton Creek Country Club in Austin, which raises over $100,000 a year for the Boys and Girls Club, as well as other charities in the Austin/Travis County area. Sen. Lucio enjoys playing in this tournament each year.

Former University of Texas System Chancellor William H. Cunningham remarked, "I would like to congratulate Sen. Eddie Lucio on his continued efforts to fund the Eddie Lucio Scholarship Fund. This program has made it possible for more than 300 students from the Valley to attend and graduate from college.

"Without the support of Sen. Lucio's efforts, many of these students would not have been able to fulfill their lifelong dreams of graduating from college. It is very appropriate that Coach Darrell Royal, who is a great Texan, be honored at the event. Coach Royal has dedicated his entire professional life to providing opportunities to young men and women of Texas. He continues to be an outstanding representative for The University of Texas," added Dr. Cunningham.

It has become a tradition for Sen. Lucio to ask a Texas legend to serve as the guest of honor at each golf classic. Last year, he honored Ruben Ramos, a well-known Tejano performer, and raised $50,000 that provided 60 scholarships for graduating seniors throughout his South Texas Senatorial District.

Two recipients per local high school are selected each year from among 10,000 applicants. Counselors from local high schools nominate the recipients to ensure that the most deserving applicants receive the scholarships. Since the inception of this fund, more than 300 scholarships have been awarded to students who enroll in a state-funded institution of higher learning in South Texas.

"Sen. Eddie Lucio has helped expand educational opportunity for students from throughout South Texas with the scholarship fund that he established. These scholarships, earmarked for students who enroll in Texas public universities, not only provide substantial financial assistance to the students but also strengthen our state and its higher education institutions by helping to ensure that more of our highly qualified students remain in Texas," remarked University of Texas System Chancellor R. D. Burck.

The Chancellor went on to say that "the University of Texas System is deeply grateful to Sen. Lucio for his vision and commitment to Texas higher education and for his unwavering dedication to a brighter future for the young people of South Texas."

The entry fee for persons interested in participating is $65, and includes a reception honoring Coach Royal on Thursday, July 18, at Amigo Land Events Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The fee also covers green fees, carts and a barbeque luncheon immediately after the tournament.
