Sen. Lucio invites media and public to bill signing ceremony in Brownsville of two key measures for the Border

AUSTIN, TX--Today state Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, announced a bill signing ceremony for two pieces of his legislation, Senate Bill 1296 and Senate Bill 322. Gov. Rick Perry will sign these two measures on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at 1:30 p.m., at the Cameron Park Community Center at 2100 Gregory Ave. in Brownsville.

SB1296 will provide Border counties $175 million, subject to voter approval of a constitutional amendment (Senate Joint Resolution 37), to pave colonia streets and provide colonias access to public roads. Governor Perry will also sign SB 322, which is the most comprehensive reform of our state's housing programs ever passed by the Legislature. It combines both fiscal accountability and major new resources for the fight against homelessness, substandard living conditions and poverty.

At the 1:30 p.m. bill signing, the Governor will also swear in Mr. J. Rolando Olvera, Jr. from Brownsville, as Judge of the 357th Judicial District Court serving Cameron and Willacy counties. Mr. Olvera will replace Judge Rogelio Valdez who was elected Chief Justice of the 13th Court of Appeals.

Earlier at 12 p.m. the Governor will sign House Bill 910 by state Rep. Roberto Gutierrez, D-McAllen, and sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Lucio that formally establishes the Center for Rural Public Health under the A&M Health Science Center at the El Milagro Clinic at 901 E. Vermont in McAllen. The Center will deliver health education outreach programs and provide community based instructional sites for the education of public health professionals.
