Sen. Lucio appointed by Lt. Gov. Ratliff to Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of Southern Legislative Conference

AUSTIN, TX- On Monday, March 19, 2001, Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff appointed state Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, to the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC).

"I am proud to have been appointed to one of the SLC's eight standing committees," said Sen. Lucio. "This is indeed both an honor and a great opportunity for me to further help the people of my district, which relies heavily on agriculture and includes a large rural population."

The Southern Legislative Conference was established in 1947 as the southern regional component of the Council of State Governments to encourage intergovernmental cooperation among 16 southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In 1970, the Conference adopted Southern Legislative Conference as its official name, and in 1996 the SLC celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The standing committees of the Southern Legislative Conference work to address problems that impact the 16-member southern states.

Sen. Lucio's appointment is effective immediately and continues through 2002.

On March 2, 2001, Lt. Gov. Ratliff also reappointed Sen. Lucio to the Energy Council, which provides an excellent forum to facilitate cooperation in national energy policy matters among the energy-producing states of the Southwest.
