AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, today announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Brownsville Department of Public Safety (DPS) building will be on Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. at 2900 Paredes Line Road.
“Since I became a state Senator, I've been working hard to bring a suitable and permanent DPS home to the lower Rio Grande Valley,” said Sen. Lucio. “I am extremely proud and thrilled to see that this long overdue building will soon become a reality for our DPS officers and employees working for the residents of the lower Rio Grande Valley.”
Joining Sen. Lucio at the event will be Commissioner M. Colleen McHugh and Lt. Col. Thomas A. Davis, Jr., current assistant director scheduled to assume the director's role on March 1, 2000 when Mr. Dudley M. Thomas, the current director, retires.
Construction on the building, located one block north of FM 802, next to Christian Fellowship Church, began on Oct. 18 and is scheduled for completion by June 23, 2000, and will be 12,000 square feet. Construction costs will total $1.8 million (project construction cost is $1,427,100 and land cost is $178,487). Housed out of the new building will be the offices of the highway patrol, vehicle inspection, license and weight, driver's license, motor vehicle theft, narcotics and safety coordinator. A total of 38 DPS employees will occupy the facility.
