San Antonio, Texas — State Senator José Menéndez released the following statement in response to a Houston Chronicle article and Express New article that discovered the Texas Education Agency was encouraging school districts to limit access to special education.
"This is a bad policy that hurts families who need it the most. As a father of three school-age children, it is deeply disturbing to me. Restricting access to special education runs counter to state law and federal law. Every child deserves an education catered to their learning needs. Sadly, this article confirms my suspicions about special education services in Texas. My office has received numerous calls from parents whose children have been denied the services they need and deserve in school. Many of these children have been diagnosed by private physicians and yet are turned down for services at school. The Texas Education Agency should know the legislature is watching and we will not tolerate a top-down policy that limits access to special education."
