(AUSTIN) — Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, announced today (Friday) that the Cotulla-La Salle County Airport will receive $1,060,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) Aviation Facilities Grant Program.
The funds will help the airport proceed with planned improvements, including engineering and design for a runway extension.
"With the economic boom occurring in La Salle County due to the Eagle Ford Shale, jet traffic at the Cotulla-La Salle County Airport has increased substantially," Senator Zaffirini said. "Construction of a longer runway will allow the airport to accommodate more air traffic, thereby boosting economic development and creating jobs."
An air hub for dove, quail and white-tail deer hunters from across the United States, the Cotulla-La Salle County Airport boasts rental cars, a deer-proof fence surrounding the runway and an office with computers and other amenities for pilots.
"Community airports such as Cotulla's account for more than three million flight hours per year," Senator Zaffirini said. "What's more, they provide critical aviation facilities and services for agricultural, medical, business and commuter purposes. "
Project costs will be funded by the TxDOT Aviation Facilities Grant Program and the City of Cotulla.
