Houston, Texas — After learning that many children across the state were required to attend school this past Memorial Day, State Senator John Whitmire announced that he will introduce legislation to require public schools to observe Memorial Day.
"Across this nation, families and communities attended events in remembrance of our service men and women who gave their lives to protect our freedoms," Whitmire said. "It is wrong that some Texas school children were not able to observe this national holiday."
Several legislators have already called to express their interest in co-sponsoring the proposed legislation. "My colleagues and I are going to make it clear that all public schools will honor our veterans and fallen heroes on Memorial Day."
