As we celebrate Easter, I want to take a moment to discuss the bonds that we share with one another. Whether through religion, other shared beliefs or experiences, we are connected.
Lewisville's Bendt Distilling Co. and Frisco's ReNue Pharmacy are producing hand sanitizer. Grapevine's Must Love Fabric and Fort Worth's aerospace company GDC Technics, are making masks. Texas Motor Speedway hosted a blood drive, and a young girl in Lake Dallas is raising money to help provide meals and necessities for her school friends.
A new initiative is pairing members of our community together to connect hourly restaurant workers who have been laid off with groups like the North Texas Food Bank who need volunteers will help make sure no one goes hungry. Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee has donated 50,000 meals for kids at North Texas Boys and Girls Clubs during this difficult time.
This is just a short list of countless acts of kindness in Senate District 12, and I am so incredibly proud to represent all of you. Your Texas leaders are doing everything possible to expand our healthcare workforce, facilities, and resources. We have over 20,000 hospital beds, more than 2,200 ICU beds, nearly 7,670 ventilators, and over 5 million masks.
More than 100,000 Texans have been tested for the coronavirus, out of which 90% have tested negative. Two weeks ago the number of COVID-19 cases were doubling every three days. We are now seeing the cases double every six days. This slowdown is a result of our collective efforts to stop the spread. Thank you to every Texan who is practicing social distancing. We are on the right track. For more information visit DSHS.
I am working day and night to maximize the safety of our state. I hope you take the time to celebrate the positive -- and count your blessings -- this Easter weekend.
This Good Friday and Easter are unlike any in living memory. However, we can take heart in knowing the Good News that darkness does not have the final say. Let this Easter, and the remarkable stories in our community, be a reminder that the light will break through and that we can look forward to a day of being together again with hope.
