AUSTIN – Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been named to the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) Joint Interim Select Committee, which will examine the challenges facing health benefit plans administered by TRS.
"The rising cost of health care is a major challenge facing state governments all over the country, and we need to look for innovative ways to keep up with those costs so that we can provide the best possible benefits to our educators, who provide an invaluable service to our state,” said Senator Nelson.
The committee was created to study and review the health benefit plans administered by the Teacher Retirement System of Texas under the Texas Public School Retired Employees Group Benefits Act and the Texas School Employees Uniform Group Health Coverage Act. The TRS select committee is directed to propose reforms to address issues relating to the financial soundness of the plans, the cost and affordability of plan coverage to persons eligible for coverage under the plans, and the sufficiency of access to physicians and health care providers under the plans. The committee will submit their report to the legislature by January 15, 2017 ahead of the upcoming legislative session.
