AUSTIN – Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, was named the 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce today in recognition of her leadership and contributions to the Flower Mound community.
"I am very grateful to the chamber for presenting me with this award. It is a great honor to follow in the footsteps of so many of our wonderful local leaders who have received this award over the years. Most of all, I am deeply honored to represent this community in the Texas Senate and proud to call Flower Mound my hometown," she said.
"The Citizen of the Year is awarded annually to a current member of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce who has provided distinguished leadership or service to the organization," said Lori Walker, President of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce. "The recipient is a person who by regular engagement in his or her business, profession or calling has made a marked contribution to the progress and welfare of the community. This definition IS our Citizen of the Year, Senator Jane Nelson!"
Senator Nelson is a founding member of the Lewisville Lake Symphony, and was a driving force in the creation of PediPlace. She serves on the boards of Christian Community Action and the Denton County Child Advocacy Center. She is a lifetime member of the PTA after joining the organization while her five children attended school in Lewisville ISD. Senator Nelson founded programs to teach adults in Denton County to read, and was so effective there is an award named after Senator Nelson for community education -- the Jane Nelson Friend of Community Education Award for the Texas Community Education Association. She and her husband, Mike Nelson, started an aerospace manufacturing firm that grew to over 300 employees, and they are active members of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce.
