AUSTIN – Senator Jane Nelson, R- Flower Mound, applauded today's decision by the Texas Railroad Commission to hire a seismologist, Dr. David Craig Pearson, a former team leader for a Los Alamos National Laboratory seismic, experimental field team and who also holds a doctorate in geophysics from Southern Methodist University, to study seismic events in Texas and evaluate and research seismic activity associated with oil and gas exploration and production. The Commission announced in late January they would hire a seismologist following the series of recent earthquakes in Azle, Texas.
"I am pleased to see the Railroad Commission has moved quickly to hire a seismologist, and believe that Dr. Pearson is very qualified to do this important work," said Senator Nelson. "While I appreciate the positive impact the oil and gas industry has had in Texas, we should know more about any possible relationships between the industry's activities and the recent earthquakes in my district. I look forward to seeing this research completed and will carefully consider it as I continue to ensure for the safety of my constituents."
Following the Commission's announcement they would be hiring a seismologist, Senator Nelson sent Chairman Barry Smitherman a letter expressing her concerns for the citizens of Azle and encouraging them to " move expeditiously to gather the necessary data." A copy of the letter can be read here.
