AUSTIN — The Senate Jurisprudence Committee today unanimously approved SB 947 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, which affirms that adverse possession claims on property do not grant any ownership rights to that property.
"Following numerous reports of 'squatters' in North Texas claiming foreclosed or abandoned homes through these claims, this bill addresses the use of this archaic law and ensures that simply squatting will not convey any property," said Senator Nelson.
SB 947 affirms that adverse possession claims are not a defense against charges of burglary, empowering district attorneys to prosecute these claims. The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
