AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson received CASA's Champion for Texas Children award today in recognition of her support for neglected children in Texas. CASA advocates on behalf of abused children as they navigate the court and foster care systems.
"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by CASA. This is an organization I greatly admire, and their mission is very near and dear to my heart," said Senator Nelson. "I want to thank them for presenting me with this award. More importantly, I want to thank them for everything they do on behalf of Texas children."
"Senator Jane Nelson, as chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, is the leading advocate in the Texas Legislature for our most vulnerable citizens; abused and neglected children in state custody," said Andrea Sparks, director of public policy and outreach for Texas CASA. "Despite a myriad of other critical issues facing our state in the past several sessions, Senator Nelson has made children in the foster care system a legislative and budget priority. Senator Nelson is also a longtime champion for CASA, securing state funding for additional volunteers for children, sponsoring CASA Day at the Capitol, and supporting the local CASA programs in her district."
