AUSTIN -- Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, received an award from the Texas Association of Local Health Officials for passing legislation to ensure that public health funding reflects local needs and priorities.
"Local health officials are our boots on the ground in dealing with public health issues such as the spread of infectious diseases and food-borne illnesses," Senator Nelson said.
SB 969 ensures the involvement of local health officials in setting policy priorities and minimizes duplication of services between federal, state and local levels. It creates a Public Health Funding and Policy Committee within the Department of State Health Services to evaluate public health needs and establish policy priorities.
"Senator Nelson's support for this bill demonstrates thoughtful solutions to addressing the fiscal and programmatic needs of public health for our families, friends and neighbors," said Celestino Garcia, President of the Texas Association of Local Health Officials.
