AUSTIN — Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, will serve as Chairman of the Senate Health & Human Services Committee, according to committee assignments handed down late yesterday by the Lieutenant Governor, who re-appointed Senator Nelson to the Finance, Government Organization and Nominations committees.
"I am honored to continue serving as Chairman and am ready to press ahead with our efforts to make Texas a healthier state," Senator Nelson said. "Our top goals are to improve access to health care, protect our most vulnerable citizens, strengthen our health care work force, and emphasize prevention to encourage healthy lifestyles."
As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Nelson will be in a strong position to advocate on behalf of regional priorities for North Texas such as transportation and education. "Even though Texas is one of 6 states with positive cash flow in this difficult economy, we have significant challenges. We can meet our needs, but we have to live within our means and remember that every dollar we spend is a dollar someone worked very hard to earn."
On the Nominations Committee, she will have an important vote on the confirmation of gubernatorial appointees. "It has been a longstanding goal of mine to increase the number of local appointees to state boards and commissions, and I hope to continue that effort this session."
On the Government Organization Committee, she will play a role in considering reforms to state government, along with legislation for state agencies that are up for Sunset review. "In this economy, it is extremely important that we work to reduce inefficiencies, duplications and waste in our government. I look forward to putting these issues under a microscope," she said.
