AUSTIN - Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, was re-appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services for the 2007 legislative session, which began last week and continues through May 28. She will also continue to serve on the Finance, Government Organization and Nominations committees, along with Texas Legislative Council.
"Collectively, these committee assignments put me in a strong position to represent the priorities of our community, especially during the appropriations process. We need to achieve the property tax relief approved in the special session, fully fund transportation, invest in teachers and streamline our health and human services," Senator Nelson said.
Senator Nelson's chairmanship will allow her to press forward with priority issues in health and human services such as improving access to medical care for Texans. She will also press forward with her response to recent problems in the state's foster care system, Medicaid reform, day care safety and the advancement of healthy living in Texas.
"This will be a heavy lifting session for our Health & Human Services Committee, and I know my colleagues and I are up to the challenge. We need to tackle the problem of uninsured Texas, reform Medicaid, improve child safety and, perhaps most importantly, encourage Texans of all ages to take better care of themselves," Senator Nelson said.
