Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, joined the state's top health care leaders yesterday for a news conference announcing a reduction in medical liability insurance premiums for Texas health care providers.
"This is welcome news - not only for Texas physicians but for families in the 152 counties in Texas who still do not have an OBGYN and for the other parts of Texas where medical care options have been limited because of the high cost of medical liability insurance," said Senator Nelson, who is Chairman of the Senate Health & Human Services Committee.
The plans for a rate reduction were announced by the Texas Medical Liability Trust, the state's largest carrier of insurance for Texas health care providers. The reduction is credited to the passage of Proposition 12, a Constitutional amendment sponsored by Senator Nelson in the 2003 Legislature to reduce meritless lawsuits. Voters approved Proposition 12 in November 2003.
