AUSTIN -- Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, will receive the 2004 Silver Spur Award from the Texas Travel Industry Association at a reception tonight in Austin. The award recognizes Senator Nelson's contributions to the promotion of tourism in Texas.
"Texas is home to an incredibly diverse group of tourism destinations, and it is important that we promote every one of them," Senator Nelson said. "We faced an unprecedented budget challenge last session, but we felt it was important to maintain our investment in promoting tourism because of the important role this industry plays in our economy."
As Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission during the 2003 Legislature, Senator Nelson oversaw the re-authorization process for 29 state agencies, boards and commissions, including the Texas Department of Economic Development. Senator Nelson authored legislation consolidating that agency into the Office of the Governor, earning her widespread praise for raising the profile of the state's business recruitment and tourism promotion efforts. In addition, Senator Nelson fought to preserve funding for tourism as a member of the Senate Finance Committee.
