Senator Nelson, Local Shelter Team up to Deliver Holiday Cheer

AUSTIN - Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, will join local celebrities Scott Murray and Larry North in Hurst on Saturday for a holiday celebration for families affected by domestic violence.

The event, sponsored by the Battered Women's Foundation, takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 20, at the Word of Love Church, 1860 Precinct Line Road in Hurst. More than 800 people are expected to attend the event featuring door prizes, gifts and a visit from Santa Claus. One lucky mom will drive away in a car donated by A-1 Auto.

"The holidays are a time for family, and unfortunately there are families here in our community whose lives have been turned upside down by violence in their home. Many of these individuals are spending their first holiday on their own, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to spend some time with these brave women and let them know that they are not alone this fight," Senator Nelson, who has sponsored several anti-domestic violence laws, said.

Established in 1995, the Battered Women's Foundation provides sanctuary and support for victims of domestic abuse and their children. More than 1,500 individuals have been served by the foundation this year.

"It is going to mean so much to our families to have people like Senator Nelson, Scott Murray and Larry North to spend this time. These truly are remarkable women who have risked everything and overcome enormous obstacles to put their lives on a better path," Brenda Jackson, the foundation's director, said. "There is still time for others in the community to adopt a Christmas angel for this event, and we welcome any support for those in the giving spirit."

NOTE: Due to privacy concerns, some women attending Saturday's event may elect not to be interviewed by reporters.
