AUSTIN -- The Texas Senate today approved SB 173, filed by State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, to allow service men and women to defer their property tax payments while on active duty. The bill now moves to the House for consideration.
"Our fighting men and women should be focusing on the job at hand and about coming home safely to their families ... not worrying about their property tax bills. As they protect our interests in Iraq, it is important that we protect their interests at home," Senator Nelson said.
SB 173 would eliminate late penalties on property tax owed to any taxing jurisdiction in Texas. Payments would be due 60 days after:
- person is discharged from active military service
- person returns to the state for more than 10 days
- person returns to non-active duty status in the reserves
- the war or national emergency ends.
