AUSTIN -- The Texas Academy of Family Physicians today bestowed its highest honor on Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, who was named recipient of the Academy's Presidential Award of Merit during its annual meeting in San Antonio. The award honors an individual who shows exemplary service on behalf of Texas' patients and physicians.
"To be recognized by a group of individuals whose professional lives are devoted to keeping Texas families healthy is a tremendous honor," Senator Nelson said. "I am deeply grateful."
During the 77th legislative session, Senator Nelson fought to strengthen medical privacy laws for Texas patients by authoring Senate Bill 11, which prohibits the release of confidential, personal medical information without patient consent. Additionally, Nelson authored Senate Bill 19, which returned physical education to public schools to combat the rapid and dangerous rise of obesity and diabetes among Texas youth.
"We applaud Senator Nelson and her efforts to improve access to quality health care, protect patient privacy, restore physical education to our schools, and restore fair business operations in our practices," Dr. Justin Bartos, TAFP President, said.
Senator Nelson has also led the charge in mitigating billing problems in the managed care industry as chair of the Senate Select Committee on Prompt Medical Pay. "During her tenure, Senator Nelson has displayed a broad depth of understanding for the needs of patients and providers of Texas. Her commitment to health care is without question and I am honored to present her with the TAFP Presidential Award of Merit," Bartos said.
TAFP, Texas' largest medical specialty organization, promotes and assures the maintenance of high-quality health care, has 31 local chapters and is a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
