AUSTIN -- State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, will accept two awards this week from local organizations dedicated to helping victims of family violence. The awards recognize Senator Nelson for successfully pushing eight bills through the Texas Legislature this past session that will provide better protection for victims of domestic violence and their families, as well as strengthen penalties for repeat domestic offenders.
"While it is a great honor to receive these awards, it is difficult to celebrate when so many families are being torn apart by domestic violence, which I believe has reached epidemic proportions in Texas. We were able to make some good changes in our laws this session, but we clearly have more work ahead of us if we are to stem the tide," Senator Nelson said. "I hope we are able to build our legislative success this session to send a strong message that violence has no place in our society, especially not in our families."
Denton County Friends of the Family will present Senator Nelson with the Eugenia Proter Rayzor Award of Excellence during a reception at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Orndorf Haus, 2300 Highland Village Road. The Women's Shelter of Arlington will recognize Senator Nelson's legislative achievements during a presentation at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the DFW Hyatt-East Tower Ballroom.
Senator Nelson also received the Outstanding Legislator Award from the Texas Council on Family Violence in June.
