AUSTIN - State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been selected to chair a special subcommittee which will investigate the budgets of several state agencies. Lt. Governor Bob Bullock appointed Nelson Chair of the Interim Finance Subcommittee on Health and Human Services and Regulatory Agencies.
The subcommittee will measure efficiency and accountability in the agencies' handling of taxpayer money. It will evaluate each agency's budget history, including such factors as accuracy of performance measures and number of employees. The Senate Finance Committee will use the results in determining budget appropriations during the next session.
"Every penny in these agency budgets comes from taxpayers," Nelson said. "These agencies must be accountable to Texans for how that money is spent."
Senator Nelson is a member of the budget-writing Finance Committee and is vice Chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. In the 75th Legislature, she filed a bill which would have created the Texas Grace Commission to evaluate the entire state budget and recommend spending controls.
The subcommittee will issue a progress report by March 1, 1998 and its final report by October 1, 1998. Senators Carlos F. Truan and Royce West were also appointed to the subcommittee.
