Sen. Larry Taylor Receives AARP Texas Legislative Achievement Award

PASADENA, Texas – In recognition of his work during the 2017 Regular Texas Legislative Session, State Sen. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) Monday was presented a Texas Legislative Achievement Award from AARP Texas.

Sen. Taylor sponsored and fought for successful passage of legislation – HB 3276 – that requires freestanding ERs to inform patients whether they’re "in network" for the patients' health insurance. The legislation, which received bipartisan support, was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott and took effect on Sept. 1.

Most Texans save money if they get care from “in network” doctors and clinics that have agreements with insurance companies. Increasingly, patients are finding themselves in a bind: They receive health care they thought was covered, then later find out the freestanding ER was not “in network.” The resulting unexpected bills are called "surprise medical bills." The number of freestanding ERs in Texas communities has grown significantly in the past decade, resulting in more surprise bills.

Sen. Taylor was presented the Legislative Achievement Award at the Feb. 12 meeting of AARP's Deer Park Chapter (#3766). Charlene James, AARP Texas president, and Blake Hutson, whose work for AARP includes combating surprise medical bills, were among the presenters.

Sen. Taylor represents Texas Senate District 11, which includes all or part of Pearland, League City, Pasadena, Galveston, Texas City, Friendswood and Alvin.
