Lieutenant Governor Bill Ratliff Announcement
AUSTIN - Lt. Governor Bill Ratliff announced today that he would not be a candidate for a full term as Lt. Governor of the State of Texas in 2002. Ratliff was elected by fellow senators on December 28, 2000 to fill the vacancy left when Rick Perry became governor.
As Lt. Governor, Ratliff presided over the Senate during the 77th Legislative Session.
Ratliff, with his wife Sally, made the decision after returning home to East Texas when the legislative session adjourned.
"I love policy-making, but I do not love politics," said Ratliff.
Ratliff continues to represent the first senatorial district, an office he has held since 1989. He declined to say if would seek re-election to his senate seat.
The Ratliffs live in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
