HOUSTON - Senator Garcia will host a press conference with local School Board Trustees to bring attention to the alarming decrease of Latino student attendance and enrollment in Houston area school districts.
The press conference will take place Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. in the Media Room of the Harris County Department of Education, 6300 Irvington Blvd, Houston, Texas 77022.
"Many of us, one year later, are still experiencing the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey and many are yet to be back in their homes. Also, immigrant families are undoubtedly living in fear due to the current administration’s zero-tolerance immigration policies. People have gone into hiding due to the fear of deportation, regardless of having attained legal status. We want to send the message loud and clear that no matter your housing situation or immigration status, public school districts are ready to work with you to get your kids into school this year. Whether it is because of confusion or fear, please do not allow your children to fall behind in their studies. School is a safe place for students and families. The education of all of our children is critical to the future of our community,” stated Senator Garcia.
