FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 27, 2013
Today, the United States Senate moved forward on legislation that will allow the millions of undocumented immigrants an opportunity to come out of the shadows and start the process of legalizing their immigration status. The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013" (S. 744) is a comprehensive reform bill set to overhaul our nation's broken immigration system.
"We know this bill is not perfect, but it is an important step in the right direction to providing a path to legalization for the millions of undocumented workers and students that live in the shadows, work hard to keep our economy strong, and strive to become permanent legal residents of the United States," stated Senator Sylvia Garcia.
The legislation is now expected to move forward to the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Garcia continued to state, "The American electorate has made it clear they will not tolerate anti-Latino and anti-immigrant conservative opposition to defeat needed immigration reform legislation. I encourage the House to follow the bi-partisan approach established by the U.S. Senate and avoid divisive changes that do not put our nation's interests first. The time to act is now."
The U.S. Senate passed out the legislation 68-32.
