AUSTIN — Today, Senator Brandon Creighton's "Right to Hunt & Fish Act" passed to engrossment in the Senate. Filed as Senate Joint Resolution 22, this constitutional amendment upholds and protects the right for Texans' to hunt and fish as a preferred method of managing and conserving the state's wildlife population.

"Hunting and fishing are activities that have been inherently passed down from generation to generation and are engrained in our state's heritage," said Senator Creighton. "With recent lawsuits across the country successfully denying citizens certain hunting rights, our Texas heritage is threatened and needs protection."

"Our state has an obligation to take a strong stand on this issue," Senator Creighton continued. "I'm eager to work alongside Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) to get this common-sense legislation passed in the House and to the voters for approval this November."

The "Right to Hunt & Fish" proposed constitutional amendment does not affect the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's ability to collect hunting and fishing license fees and is strongly endorsed and supported by the National Rifle Association, Dallas Safari Club and over 60 sportsmen's organizations, representing 3.3 million avid outdoorsmen.

If passed by both chambers, the language contained in SJR 22 will be presented for a public vote in November 2015. Currently, 18 states have passed similar versions of this proposed amendment in their state constitutions.
