FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS — Today (Monday) Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) announces two events, the "Texas Legends Golf Tournament" and "Bikes To The Beach Tour," to be held October 11 and October 12, 2013, respectively. Both events benefit the Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to students attending colleges or universities in Cameron, Kenedy, Kleberg, Willacy, and Hidalgo Counties.
Senator Lucio will host the 2013 Texas Legends Golf Tournament on Friday, October 11, 2013, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course, 300 River Levee Rd., Brownsville, Texas 78523.
For more than 20 years, the annual Texas Legends Gold Tournament has served as the principal fundraising event for the Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Scholarship Fund. It has become a tradition for Senator Lucio to ask a "Texas Legend" to serve as the guest of honor at each Tournament. Past Texas Legends have included former University of Texas football coach Darrell K. Royal, Grammy award-winning Tejano performer Ruben Ramos, former University of Texas System Chancellor William H. Cunningham, Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp, World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Kathy Whitworth, and Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Champions Robert Newhouse, Walt Garrison and Tom Rafferty.
This year's Texas Legend will be Mr. Ricky Phillips, bass guitar player for American rock band STYX. STYX is famous for such hits as "Blue Collar Man," "Come Sail Away," "Renegade," and "Mr. Roboto." Mr. Phillips and band mates Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Lawrence Gowan, and Todd Sucherman have performed more live shows than all of the previous years of the band's career combined. As part of STYX, Mr. Phillips has performed at the Super Bowl, as part of chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, and Bad Company, and has recorded two STYX studio albums. Previous to joining STYX, Mr. Phillips played in bands The Babys, Bad English and Coverdale/Page.
"Mr. Phillips' music has touched the lives of millions of people across the globe for more than forty years. Now, he calls Texas home, and has become a true Texas Legend. I am delighted to welcome Mr. Phillips to the Rio Grande Valley," Senator Lucio said.
Following the Golf Tournament, Senator Lucio will host the Bikes To The Beach Tour on Saturday, October 12, 2013. This is the first year Senator Lucio has hosted the Tour. It invites registrants to bike to South Padre Island from either Harlingen (42 miles) or Los Fresnos (24 miles). On-site registration in Harlingen begins at 7 a.m. at Valley Race Park, 2601 S. Ed Carey Dr., Harlingen, Texas 78552. On-site registration in Los Fresnos begins at 8:30 a.m. at Los Fresnos Rodeo Arena Los Fresnos Rodeo Grounds, 500 Texas Highway 100, Los Fresnos, Texas 78566.
At the conclusion of the Tour, beginning at 12 noon, Senator Lucio will host a concert at the finish line featuring Mr. Ricky Phillips. The concert will take place at Clayton's Beach Bar and Grill, 6900 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island, Texas 78597.
"I am so excited by the addition of 'Bikes To The Beach.' This fun, family-friendly event will attract even more people than the Golf Tournament alone, thus raising even more money for worthy scholarship recipients. We look forward to making 'Bikes To The Beach' an annual event," Senator Lucio said.
Both the Texas Legends Golf Tournament and Bikes To The Beach raise funds for The Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Scholarship Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation which awards college scholarships to students graduating from high schools in counties comprising Senator Lucio's senate district.
Fund recipients are successful students who intend to pursue higher education. Each year, the Fund selects students (typically one male and one female) graduating from each high school in Senate District 27 (Cameron, Kenedy, Kleberg, Willacy, and Hidalgo Counties) to receive a scholarship. Candidates were nominated by their high school counselors. Recipients have not received any other form of scholarship. All recipients are American citizens who intend to enroll in at least nine credit hours at the University of Texas at Brownsville, Texas Southmost College, The University of Texas - Pan American, Texas State Technical College, Texas A&M Kingsville, or South Texas College.
In August 2013, the Fund awarded 52 area students scholarships worth $500.00 each.
